***The Life-Saving Hug: The story of Kyrie and Brielle***

Premature twin girls Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born on October 17, 1995, 12 weeks ahead of their due date. Needing intensive care and special medical attention, they were placed on separate incubators.

In the following days, Kyrie began to stabilize her health and gained weight. But her twin, Brielle was not doing well, had trouble breathing and heart problems. Truth is – she was not expected to live.

Their nurse, Gayle Kasparian, tried everything to help Brielle’s health get better. With nothing else to do, she went against the hospital’s policy and decided to place the twins in the same incubator.

She let the twins sleep together and was surprised at the sight of it. Kyrie put her small arm to Brielle, as if to hug her. After a while, Brielle’s heart rate stabilized, she could breathe more easily and her health is as good as Kyrie.

From then on, they decided to keep both babies together, because when they were together they kept each other alive.

Drawing Number One

Take a look at Drawing Number One. Does it frighten you? I bet you would say “Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?” Actually, that’s a common response of a grown-up. Not until we uncover the truth behind that masterpiece.

“Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.”
~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (The Little Prince)

Quick judgment. That’s how grown-ups act most of the time. No wonder we are living in a world of misunderstandings and misconceptions. We limit ourselves only to what our eyes can see that often leads to prejudice and narrow-mindedness.

Now, here’s Drawing Number Two:

Drawing Number Two

Now, did you get the whole picture? That’s a revised version of Drawing Number One.

Clearly, it’s not just a hat but a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. Now, there’s a reason to be scared right?

Pictures have limits; especially to those who have lost curiosity and imagination.

Countless times, grown-ups can only recognize what is obvious and forgot to see what’s beyond. Seems that they’ve lost the essence of imagination, because they are more attached to what is quantifiable.

Remember, that there are some hidden truths behind a picture that our eyes can see, what is essential is invisible to the eye, and can be detected only by our hearts and mind.

**Illustrations are based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s most popular and best-selling novella - The Little Prince (1943).

Favorite Quotes from The Little Prince:

“Conceited people never hear anything but praise.”

“The one thing I love in life is to sleep.”
~The Lamplighter

“When one wishes to play the wit, he sometimes wanders a little from the truth.”

“To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world . . .”
~Fox

“Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me . . .”
~Fox

“Words are the source of misunderstandings.”
~Fox

“You are beautiful, but you are empty. One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you–the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”
~The Little Prince

“Here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
~Fox

“Only the children know what they are looking for. They waste their time over a rag doll and it becomes very important to them; and if anybody takes it away from them, they cry . . .”
~The Little Prince

“It is a good thing to have had a friend, even if one is about to die. I, for instance, am very glad to have had a fox as a friend . . .”
~The Little Prince

“But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart . . .”
~The Little Prince

The things that is important is the thing that is not seen…”
~Little Prince

by Edelyn Dagñalan

They always say action speaks louder than words but action, without words, is confusing. And they (often) forget to say that though action speaks louder than words, words can be very suggestive that is why it’s better to have said much than to have never said what you needed and wanted to say when you had a chance.

I pity the people who don’t get to say what they want or need– they will forever have that regret in their hearts. They thought that it’s always action that gets the job done but I think they have to think again– words are very important, they complete the action, they explain the action.

Whenever I am in a situation that requires me to speak out, more often than not I say what I feel. Although sometimes I am not good at confrontation (’cause when the going gets tough I choose to sulk myself in silence which I consider a weakness), I find ways to express myself and say what is/are needed to be said. One of which is writing a letter. Yes, letters can be dangerous, they can be interpreted in different ways; they can be broadcasted; they can be used against the one who made it. But, I tell you this, you might think it’s not brave to resort to writing a letter because at one point it avoids confrontation, for me, it is one of the most courageous and thoughtful acts one can do. Courageous because the words you put in there can be used as a “blackmail”. Thoughtful because you spend time thinking of words and writing them down on a paper. As for me, I only write to those I am afraid to lose. The letters that I write are parts of me; each time I make one, a lose a parcel of my being but it is the only kind of loss I celebrate. Writing someone a letter is an indication that the recipient is important to me or that I want to know more about him/her. That is why I really get delighted whenever I receive a letter or a note. It’s one of the best gifts for me. It’s simple yet it really comes from the heart. And I miss receiving one how I wish I could write to myself and pretend I didn’t know…

Anyway, the point I want to make here is that people should not be afraid of saying how and what they feel in any freaking way. There are people who are so contented to see actions happening before their eyes but at the back of their minds they question if the things they see are true only because they are not backed up with words. Cold treatment. Indifference. Broken relationships. These all just rooted from actions not being supported by words. I’m not saying that for every act you do must be explained, I am after the balance of the words and acts. Imagine watching a play where actors never deliver any line– yes, you might be amazed at first but you will surely yearn for words.

So, if you are one of those who always choose to let the action speak for them, maybe it’s time to change your way. There might be people around you who are also craving for your speech, wanting and needing your words to feel secured. Say those words you keep even if they mean pain, at least they are known and heard. Remember, one of the reasons for hailing humans is because they have language. And the best way to use a language is to speak up, to communicate through words.

(STOP PLAYING SAFE! JUST SAY IT! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? THEY MISS HEARING FROM YOU.)

******

“Language has three important uses–it expresses thought, conceals thought, and takes the place of thought.”

“A zero added to the end of a number drastically changes its value. In our life, pay attention to detail; as small as it may be, it makes a huge difference.” -from Motivates My Day

Jesus says in Matthew 5:41-42 (NIV), “If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

According to Christ’s Commission Fellowship:

“The first mile is our doing what is required, the second mile is our decision to do beyond what is required, for love. The second mile is the love mile, the miracle mile. There’s no reason why we should go the miracle mile, but to meet who waits for us at the end.”

And to understand more deeply what the second mile is, here’s a story of a little boy’s second mile journey…

******

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six pack of root beer and he started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park just staring at some pigeons.

The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her a Twinkie. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer. Again, she smiled at him. The boy was delighted.

They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? She’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?” She replied, “I ate Twinkies in the park with God.” However, before her son responded, she added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

Therefore Share this to people who have touched your life in a special way. Let them know how important they are. Have lunch with God.

-Author Unknown

******

No matter how hard the situation is, sometimes all it takes is a miracle smile.

Be like the little boy. Give a little spark of kindness to a stranger, a friend, or someone you know. Go for the second mile and touch a life.

“Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”
~Mother Teresa

“Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.”
~Quoted in P.S. I Love You

“Death ends a life, not a relationship.”

Have you lost track of someone who made a big impact in your life? Is it someone close to your heart? A non-relative who treated you as part of his family?

Maybe it was a colleague, a friend, or a mentor. Someone who helped you discover the world in a different perspective, lead you when were searching, and guided you to make your way to the right path.

Does someone familiar pops into your mind? Wouldn’t you like to see that person again?

As for Mitch Albom, that person was his favorite professor, Morrie Schwartz. Mitch was lucky to have the chance to reunite with his old friend. A little bit late though, he rediscovered his once love-to-dance professor in the last months of his life. Time has passed, and the disease (known as ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) withered Morrie’s body, but to Mitch, he’s still the man he’s looking up to. In the last moments of Morrie’s life, he was able to do his first love – teaching, but this time it’s about life and death. Indeed, he’s a “teacher until the end.”

“Tuesdays with Morrie” is a story of friendship, death, and life’s greatest lesson.

Compiled QUOTES from Tuesdays with Morrie:

“So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.”

“Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do”

“Dying is not synonymous to useless.”

“People are only mean when they’re threatened.”

“Love is how you stay alive, even after you are gone.”

“Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

“We put our values in the wrong things. And it leads to very disillusioned lives.”

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.”

“You cannot substitute material things for love or gentleness or for tenderness or for a sense of comradeship.”

“If you’re trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. They will look down at you anyhow. And if you’re trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. They will only envy you. Status will get you nowhere. Only an open heart will allow you to float equally between everyone.”

Chuck Bass, a short but not so sweet name, is the image of a young social elite that takes advantages (for better or for worse) on the power and privileges handed over to him on a silver platter. Being an antagonist (and sometimes protagonist in-between), his character is the most exciting one to follow. He may look tough on the outside, but he has a soft spot on the inside too. He also delivers remarkable one-liners that may put a smile on your face.
